It's been a while since we've posted to our Blog. Apologies. Time flies when you are building a small business.
We did feel it was important to blog about the upcoming William Scott Festival. It's an important event in the community of New Hamburg and you should definitely come for a visit, a beer, a burger or bring your soap box!!!
Marie Voisin, local historian and true champion of all things New Hamburg, has studied and written about William Scott. You can see some of her findings in a 2009 New Hamburg Independent article. William Scott was the founder of New Hamburg and made a huge contribution not only to the infrastructure but to the community as a whole, as post-master, village planner, Reeve, Justice of the Peace, business owner and patron of the school.
Amongst other things, Scott "dammed the Nith River flowing through the proposed settlement tract, built a sawmill, flourmill, fabric mill, distillery and hotel"*.
On the William Scott website it's stated that "Had it not been for William Scott, New Hamburg might not have been created. We honour his memory and accomplishments with The William Scott Festival because we are thankful for the pathway he established." He is truly the reason the town is here today and so deserving of a festival in his honour.
As part of the celebrations on June 23rd there will be a Soap Box Derby, 1 Mile Run, Concert Band, Best Burger in New Hamburg Competition Judged by Olympian Mandy Bujold, and our personal favourite the Scottish Beer Garden.
Yes, that's right! a Beer Garden. We will be launching William Scott Ale just in time for the festival.
